Letter to Brooks from Suess recommending to connect all the ends of saps and trenches abutting on the beach by a trench, which would be furnished with a double parapet. This is because of increased apprehension of a flanking attack upon the right by way of the beach. Suess writes that he thinks the work could be performed at night.
Transcription[Letter, continued] should be placed occasionally across the trench, with proper turn-outs, to prevent enfilading. By such an arrangement the shortest possible communication with the front would be established, affording comparative safety, and avoiding the numerous most difficult, exposed and all but impassable parts of the approaches between the 2nd and 5th Parallel. I think the work could be performed during night-time with great expeditions. Great facilities would also exist for drainage, owing to the great proximity of the beach. Respectfully; Your obed. [obedient] servt. [servant] Capt. [Captain] Jno [John] L. Suess; Capt. [Captain] NY [New York] Vol [Volunteer] Engr [Engineers] [written on the side] Morris Isle, S. C. [South Carolina]; Aug. [August] 28th 1863; Suess Capt. John Vol [Voluntary] Eng [Engineers]; Recommends a direct connection with the front along the beach.
