Certificate of deed of Virginius Island property to Mrs. Fontaine Beckham Harpers Ferry National Historical Park; National Park Service A single sheet of plain off-white paper containing in originally black ink the statement of justices of the peace John Moler and John T.A. Washington confirming Mrs. Fontaine Beckham's in the deed (see cat. #8306) conveying Virginius Island property to Lewis Wernwag. Paper is creased by 3 principal and several secondary horizontal folds, extensively broken where it has crumpled along the upper crease. Document was filed in box in folder 2 under hfd-144.

Affidavit, regarding horse sold Harpers Ferry National Historical Park; National Park Service Slip of laid white paper ruled in blue cut from the mid section of a larger sheet and inscribed in ink on both sides. 1 side dated Halltown, VA February 16, 1864 certifies that a member of the 1st VA batty light arty has sold to Dittmeier a grey mare which was his own property. The signature undecipherable, is in another handwriting. The opposite side carries the certification by the captain of battery a that the horse does not belong to the battery. Below is a statement in German. stained, creased, many fine holes.

Affidavit, regarding horse sold Harpers Ferry National Historical Park; National Park Service Slip of white paper ruled in blue, torn from the corner of a larger sheet and inscribed in ink. Dated October 16 or 18 1862 and signed by a Provost Marshal. It states that a black horse sold to a citizen of Bolivar was the property of Patrick (last name undecipherable) who therefore had the right to sell it. Reverse bears an undecipherable entry in another handwriting dated October 17, 1862. Paper has stains, creases and tears. Paper was in a government envelope marked hfd-42. along with cat nos. 8255-56,8258-59.

Records receipt of $184 or $186 in summer of 1888 in partial payment of compromise settlement of Stephene security claims from William Mcsherry's heirs, and application of $60 of this payment toward back taxes due from N. Marmion

Military pass to town, order of Captain E. J. Magruder Harpers Ferry National Historical Park; National Park Service Slip of bluish laid paper ruled with blue lines comprising one end torn from a longer sheet. Inscribed in pencil-pass privates hargrove, Smith and Kaufman to town until 7 1/2 oclock/by order of/Captain E. J. Magruder. The inscription also identifies the Rome light guards and gives the date-June 14th. Paper is creased by 3 vertical folds. The left and right ends of the paper are stained, particular the reverse of the right end where the paper has broken at one point across a fold

Letter, 1880 July 31, Thomas A. Morre (Charlestown, W.VA) Harpers Ferry National Historical Park; National Park Service A sheet of off-white paper printed in black with the letterhead-county court of Jefferson County, WV. Thomas A. Moore, clerk. It contains a longhand letter in ink now brown, stating that Moore has examined the index to deeds and the judgment lien docket and found no deeds of trust given by child and Mccreight except one to A. Hunter, trustee for A.H. Herr, not released, and one to W.H. Travers, trustee for Rowland, which has been. Paper is watermarked- original/turkey linen. It has several folds.

Letter, 1892 April 30, Jas. D. Butt to Mr. Savery Harpers Ferry National Historical Park; National Park Service A sheet of off-white paper lightly ruled in blue carrying the letterhead of the National Hotel with an engraved view of the building printed in black and containing a longhand note in black ink enclosing 2 deeds of the Shenandoah Pulp Co. with a request to make note of them on the abstract of title. (see cat. #3840). The lower edge is irregular, the obverse has an ink blot at the center of the top margin. The paper has horizontal folds. Lower edge has insect damage.

Letter, 1859 April 7, M.A. Smith (Baltimore) to Mr. Burton (Harpers Ferry) Harpers Ferry National Historical Park; National Park Service A sheet of laid paper ruled with blue lines and folded in half containing a letter dated April 7,(18)59 from M.A. Smith, Baltimore to Mr. Burton requesting him to forward goods from Harpers Ferry to Cumberland. A postscript continues on the second page. The document has been spindled leaving a hole near the center of each half. The paper is in poor condition, the front and back pages are very soiled and stained. Salvaged from building 14, Burton's Jewelry Store when it was dismantled

Receipt paid by George Dittemeyer to Joseph Byrne, November 29 1841 Harpers Ferry National Historical Park; National Park Service Slip of off-white paper ruled with light blue lines containing in originally black ink a long hand receipt for $1.50 paid by George Dittemeyer to Joseph Byrne for Anderson and Byrne dated November 29 1841. The left edge of the paper is that of the original sheet. The document is lightly creased by 8 vertical folds. Widespread light brown staining and moderate soiling at the right end. This was in a government envelope marked hfd-42/ Cassandra Dittmeyer. cat. #'s 8256-8259 were also in the envelope

Marion to Congressman Bowen, postcard, found loose in account book, March 4 1919 [Recto] Harpers Ferry National Historical Park; National Park Service 1 cent, U.S. postal card with 1 cent stamp added, sent to congressman, Bowen from Annie P. Marion, dated March 4, 1918, requesting lawn grass seed. Found loose in Dr. Nicholas Marmion's account book (cat. no. 286). contains penciled notations to lost pages from the account book.

Savery [Verso] Harpers Ferry National Historical Park; National Park Service A sheet of plain blue paper, apparently originally from a pad, with letterhead printed in black- law office of Joseph Trapnell, Charles Town, WV. July 22, 1893. It contains a letter written in black in transmitting papers relating to the title to land on Virginius Island. The paper is creased by 3 horizontal folds. The center panel of the reverse has in ink- Mr. Savery. Some of the padding compound from the top edge has adhered to the reverse along the lower crease.

Marmion Harpers Ferry National Historical Park; National Park Service Handwritten in black ink and on an 8" high x 10" wide sheet of white paper with blue lines on three sides. Following is the letter reading in part: "Balto July 16 1868/Dr. NM. V. Marmion/Dear Sir:/Yours of the/14th is at hand. We send you today by/mail samples of our fine and medium/marbles and oaks suitable for libraries/and dining rooms with prices marked." Marks - embossed trade mark top, left corner with the initial "P and P."

Legal document listing births, deaths, and marriages in the Wager and Jacobs families, August 8 1793 [Verso] Harpers Ferry National Historical Park; National Park Service Elizabeth Jacobs, deposition, 1793. Confirms the birth of Sarah, the marriage of Sarah to John Wager, birth of John Jr. Elizabeth Jacobs is the sister of Robert Harper. She was married to Joseph until widowed and then married a Jacobs in 1753. Cross reference hafe 216438 where John Wager Sr suggests to John Jr to get confirmation that he is son of Sarah and heir to property that once belonged to Robert Harper.

It approves with comment the settling pond agreement, cat. # 8276, 8277. The paper is watermarked- regent linen w S and R. The reverse is marked in red pencil at the upper right corner, e-11. The paper is creased by 5 horizontal folds. The document is in good condition. It was received in envelope E and filed in box 1, folder 5, hfd-144. Record of a deed of trust from Mccreight and Yantis to Charles Davies, Receipt, August 7 1880 Harpers Ferry National Historical Park; National Park Service A sheet of off-white paper ruled with blue lines and having the left margin defined by a double purple vertical line, the upper left edges are slightly rough from being cut from a longer sheet and the lower edge roughly torn, inscribed in black ink by Deputy Clerk G.D.Moore to acknowledge receipt of $2.25 to record a deed of trust from Mccreight and Yantis to Charles Davies, trustee for Robert S. Holt and attesting receipt of the deed. Small tears and pinholes, several creases.
