Grading unnecessary for a 4' trail when the side slope is this steep. Chasteen Creek TrailGreat Smoky Mountains National ParkGrading unnecessary for a 4' trail when the side slope is this steep. Advantage should have been taken of the rock in the bank when placing the water bar. A small gully across the bar should have been placed here, with the end butted into the bank at the upper side of the rock, and the grade should have been flattened a little for a few feet above the bar. Always take advantage of rock or stumps when placing water bars, because they will be the starting place of a natural cross drainage.Chasteen Creek Trail, II-Th-5235, Physical Facilities - Trails - Horse Trails

Spruce Fir Nature Trail signGreat Smoky Mountains National ParkSpruce Fir Nature Trail Sign. The Spruce Fir Trail. The various peaks which form the backbone of the Appalachian Mountains are like a series of high stepping-stones which serve to connect the Great Smokies with Canada. In these two widely separated areas the climate, the soil, and the plant life are remarkably similar. The southernmost extent of this cool evergreen forest is in Great Smoky Mountains National Park; here it reaches its maximum development. This precious wilderness heritage will remain undisturbed for the enjoyment of this and future generations. Take the self-guide leaflet with you in order to learn more about what you see.
