[Company] (C) 55th Mass [Massachusetts] [Forces?]; North End Folly Isle S.C.; Dec [December] 17th 1863; Maj [Major] Brooks A.D.C.; Asst [Assistant] Engr [Engineer] (D.S.) [Department of the South]; [????] Yours of the 14th [????] was rec'd [received] late last night. The [????] carried it to the Hd Qrs [Headquarters] of the Reg't [Regiment], it was delayed then in getting to me. I never have joined my Regt [Regiment] since I was relieved from duty with the Engrs [Engineers]. I rec'd [received] some letter promptly in ans [answer] to mine from Morris Isle in reference to probibility [probability] of success in being transferred to the Engr's [Engineers]. I thank you Sir for the prompt [????] you gave me. I'll tell you what I've done. I sought and had granted me an interview with Col [Colonel] Serrell. it was prolonged and peculiar. I stated my case plainly. The Col [Colonel] seemed fair ([????] work "to seem to be") (two things). The Col [Colonel] gave me permission to make an application to the [????] of the stated
