Transcription[Letter] Copy; Head Quarters Volunteer Engineers; Hilton Head S.C. Feb. [February] 8th 1862; Major; I have the honor to enclose copies of a note addressed by me to the Adjt. [Adjutant] Gen. [General] and the Comdg [Commanding] General's endorsement, and to request to be informed what your decision now is relative to paying my command as Engineer troops. Very Respectfully; Your obt. [obedient] Servant; (Signed) Edward W. Serrell; Col. [Colonel] Vol. [Volunteer] Engineers; To Major Paulding; [Chief?] Paymaster [E.C.?]; Major Paulding replied as follows. Hilton Head Feb. [February] 8th 1862; Colonel; Yours of today with copy note to General Sherman and the Generals Endorsement thereon is received. As the General does not imperatively require me to depart from the instructions received from the Paymaster General, I regret am unable to make any other decision than the one already made. Regretting exceedingly that my orders do not coincide with my views in the matter. I remain; Very Respectfully; Your Obt.
