Transcription[Letter] Camp detach'd [detached?] N.Y. [New York] Vol [Volunteer] Eng'r [Engineer] Corp; St. Helena Island, S.C.; December 15th 1862; Dear Captain; Some two weeks ago I had the pleasure of reading one of your letters, received by Barbarow, he having allowed me to do so, in it you gave a general invitation for any of your Comp [Company?] to write you. Your invite I instantly accepted and daily since that period, has purposed to avail myself of it. I now do so. You have undoubtedly been kept fully posted, by your regular correspondents, as to the part taken by your Comp [Company], in the various operations and the work they have been engaged in since you left. I will try to give you an outline of our present position and prospects, hoping that I may make it interesting enough, to read. The health of the Comp [Company] is good, only 3 in the Doctors hands, orderly Felter, Fahey [Fahy] and a new recruit. Felter has been sick since the 2nd week after you left, been in Hospital since Nov [November] 11th and I believe would stay there his term of enlistment if allowed. I expect to hear of him being turned out every day, everybody says he's playing possum, you know the old saying "what everybody says must be true". I believe it in this case. Fahey [Fahy] when on this Island was out shooting, his musket was loaded with shot, foolishly attempted to knock oranges from the tree with the butt of the musket. The trigger caught, flew back and being capped, exploded the charge, wounding him in one hand and left side, he is not dangerous. The recruit has had the measles, he is recovering. You will have heard of the death of George McNeill and Thomas Cronk. Cronk had his discharge near 3 weeks before his death, no [????] going north till too late. L't [Lieutenant] Hartman and Sergeant Duffy is in N.Y. [New York] recruiting. Their time 2 months is out, we look for them back every day. 1st Lieut [Lieutenant] Maguire arrived today, he is not yet assigned to any Co [Company] waiting the Col's [Colonel's] return from York. Capt [Captain] Graef intends getting him to Comp [Company] D in place Lt [Lieutenant] Vernau who is Ac't [Acting] Adjutant. Lt [Lieutenant] Dalrymple having been ordered to his Comp [Company] we all hope he will be assigned to Comp [Company] A. The boys are quite tired of Lieut [Lieutenant] G Edwards, who with Lt [Lieutenant] N.M. Edwards, were assigned to Comp [Company] A when Lt [Lieutenant] Hartman left. Lt [Lieutenant] Edwards hopes to be permanently attached
