Letter to Brooks from Talcott, including detailed information on Parrott guns in Fort Putnam (Gregg), Battery Chatfield, and Fort Strong (Wagner). Facts are provided for each gun, such as the date of bursting, number of rounds fired before bursting, the number of pieces each gun burst into, and how far the pieces were thrown. Descriptions of any fractures are provided, as well as other observations on the conditions of the guns after bursting.
Transcription[Letter, continued] more detailed account of each gun. I have, however, given you such statistics as I could gather from the battery Commander and those which I observe myself. Perhaps a letter from you to the Commander may elicit some new facts which I have omitted. They are Capt. [Captain] Shaw at Fort Putnam, Capt. [Captain] Caldwell at Battery Chatfield and Capt. [Captain] Strahan at Fort Strong all of the 3rd R. I. Regt. [Regiment] You will notice the similarity of most of the fractures, indicating to my view that they originate from the same cause, whatever that may be. I regret that this letter has been so long delayed. I really intended to have completed and sent it sooner but one thing and another have prevented-I hope it may prove better late than never. Are you never coming over to see us? I have been expecting every day that you would be over and shall hope to see you here soon. It is an impossibility for one to get down to your quarter at present or I should have been there before this. I have two sisters at [????] visiting Capt. Sears. If you go there (as I hear is not unlikely) I hope you may meet them. Accompanying this you will find some rough sketches of the appearance of the guns after bursting which may aid you in fixing the lines of the fracture. I fear my descriptions are not any too lucid. If any more guns burst I will forward you an account of them. If there is any other matter
