Transcription[Letter, continued] [Request?] for a [????] commission in his Reg't [Regiment]. I think he would favorably endorse it. I've done so. I am now waiting for something to turn up. Your 1st query "What constituted heavy fire-is how many shots pr [per] hour by [tonight?]" (Ans. [Answer]) If I was one of a Brigade of Sappers trying to push forward a Sap while the enemy with one Gun were firing every ten minutes with the Head of the Sap for the object, I should say thus I was working under a heavy fire-i.e. if they made good shots [????] on. That was a Heavy fire the A.M. of the 23rd of Aug [August] that compelled Capt [Captain] [Sweizer?] to abandon work on the extreme left of the 4th Parallel-to be sure there was but one gun. We had no experience whereby the word Heavy could be applied to musketry firing. For 10 successive days on Chatfield there was a solid shot from James Isle alternated with a Columbiad shell from Sullivans Isle every 15 minutes. Object Chatfield-good average shots too.
