Letter to Brooks from Talcott, including detailed information on Parrott guns in Fort Putnam (Gregg), Battery Chatfield, and Fort Strong (Wagner). Transcription[Letter] Camp Det. N. Y. [New York] Vol. [Volunteer] Engr. [Engineers]; Morris Isle S. C. [South Carolina] Nov. [November] 3rd, 1863; Major T. B. Brooks; My Dear Sir; I feel ashamed that I have taken no notice of your letter of Oct. 29, but I can assure you that I have not been idle meanwhile. I was sorry that you did not see father while at the North but concluded that there must be some good reason therefor. Had you called you might have missed seeing him or any of the folk as he was much absent on business and the family on pleasure at about that time. With reference to the guns, I have collected all the facts I could ascertain concerning all which have burst both at Cummings Pt. and Fort Strong (Wagner). I propose to state them separately in the order of their bursting. I. The right 100 pdr. gun in Fort Putnam (Gregg) burst on the morning of Oct. [October] 27th after firing about 50 to 60 rounds. I saw the gun within half an hour after bursting. The appearance of the iron where not blackened by powder was good, showing no flaw or weakness. The gun blew to fragments. Five large pieces were formed and many smaller ones. The reinforce band was torn into halves and one half thrown at least 100 yards on to the beach. This is the only case I have observed where the reinforce band has given way. The carriage of the gun was destroyed. The chassis
