Letter to Brooks from Lt. Baldwin regarding the materials and labor required for the manufacture of sap rollers with iron gabions. Weights, dimensions, and cost are also provided.
Transcription[Letter, continued] [sap-roller] roller filled with cotton, owing the power of that material to absorb, and retain, moisture. The cost of the iron required for the manufacture of each lineal foot of a sap-roller 4' in diameter is $2.48. I have the honor to be; Major; Your Obedient Servt. [Servant]; James S. Baldwin. [????] NYV Corps Eng. [/Letter] Weight of Sap Roller 9 feet long and 4 feet in diameter. 20 Fasteners 9 feet long weighing 9 2/10 lbs. per lineal foot=1656 lbs; 14 Stakes 3"X1 1/2" and 9 feet long=198 lbs; 31 lbs. hoop iron per foot X 9 feet (279) = 213.3. For weight of dry [????] 2133 + 1/5th [????].
