Letter to Gillmore from Brooks in response to Gillmore's request that Brooks submit a list of maps necessary for a report on the military operations against the Defenses of Charleston Harbor. The list includes a general map of the whole field of operations, as well as siege operations and Batteries on several islands, with the desired scales. Brooks also recommends several men to assist in this work.
TranscriptionLetter to Gen Gillmore relating to maps he considered needing for his report on siege. [Letter] Hd. Qrs. [Headquarters] Dept. [Department] of the South; Engineers Office-Morris Isle S. C. [South Carolina]; Sept. [September] 15th 1863; General; In accordance with your request I submit the following memoranda concerning maps necessary to a report on the military operations against the Defenses of Charleston Harbor, as indicated by yourself. 1st A general map of the whole field of operations embracing Morris and Folly Isles, the [illegible], City of Charleston and Sullivans Isle. to a scale of 1/30,000. The addition of our own Engineering works and the new Defenses of the enemy to the [illegible] Coast Survey Map of Charleston Harbor will supply this want. 2nd A map showing all the Siege Operations against the enemies works on Morris Isle and Sumter with the Marsh Battery against Charleston to Sept. [September] 7th to a scale of 12 inches to our mile. The [illegible] of this Map [illegible] to embrace Sumter on end of Folly Isle [illegible] from the beach to the Marsh Battery on the west. Not to include Block Isle.
