Letter to Brooks from Baldwin regarding Baldwin's inspection of Parrott-gun Batteries. Baldwin reports that embrasures are in a dilapidated condition, and also discusses the strength and serviceability of the gun batteries, and the replacement of materials in the original platforms.
Transcription[Letter] Morris Island SC [South Carolina] Sept [September] 16-63; Maj [Major]; I have the honor to report that the the following is the result of my inspection of the 30 and 20 pdr Parrott-gun Batteries on the left. 1. [????] material is much decayed, but still appears to have retained sufficient strength to retain its form and position, except where it has been exposed to abrasion. 2. The Platforms in the 30 Lb gun batteries are nearly all serviceable. In the two Batteries formerly occupied by 20 Lb Parrott guns, and subsequently by [????] guns, the original platforms of light material failed, and were replaced by 2" plank. The embrasures in all of these batteries are in a dilapidated condition, and no attention appears to have been given to them, so far as this repair is concerned. This may be accounted for by the absence of sharpshooters from this immediate neighborhood. Respectfully; James S. Baldwin [/Letter] Maj TB Brooks
