Letter to Brooks from Walker, suggesting that another sap roller be immediately got up to the 4th parallel, and that another sap be started on the higher grounds to the right. Walker states that this can be done as to make a decided advance, and will not interfere with the firing of mortars upon the enemy's rifle pits.
Transcription[Letter] Morris Island S. C. [South Carolina]; Aug [August] 26th 1863; Captain; In as much as the enemy have concentrated their opposition to our sap, at the point where it now stands, and that the nature of the ground is very unfavorable to running it in the face of that opposition: I would suggest that another sap roller be immediately got up to the 4th parallel, and that we start another sap on the higher grounds to the right. It can be so done as to make a decided advance-will connect very readily when opportunity offers with that on the left-will be a diversion in our favor, and will not interfere with the fire of our mortars upon the enemy's rifle pits in our immediate advance upon the left. I am very respectfully; Your obed [obedient] servt [servant]; Joseph Walker; Capt. [Captain] Vol. [Volunteer] Engrs [Engineers]; To Capt. [Captain] T. B. Brooks; Asst [Assistant] Engr [Engineer] D. S. [Department of the South]
