Descriptive InformationLetter to Brooks from Suess in response to eleven questions sent to Suess by Brooks previously. Questions were in relation to rebel firing, how much work was done at night, and how much of the work was shoveling dirt. Suess also compared work done by soldiers during the siege to work done by citizens in civil life.

Transcription[Letter] Camp Det. [Detachment] NY [New York] Vol. [Volunteer] Engrs. [Engineers]; Folly Island S. C. [South Carolina] Decbr. [December] 16/63; Major T. B. Brooks; A. D. C.; Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your note last Decbr. [December] 8/63, which came to my hands today. You put [11?] questions to me which I shall answer to the best of my ability. Quest [Question] I. How many Reb. [Rebel] Shots per hour did we call heavy firing, and how many moderate firing? A. [Answer] As far as I can recollect it required at least 3 shots of artillery fire per 5 minutes to be called heavy firing, which means 2 shots, or less, per 5 minutes, was named moderate. Qu. [Question] II. What part of the work was done in the night? A. [Answer] As far as my personal knowledge of the matter [????] I would say
