Letter to Brooks from Suess in response to eleven questions sent to Suess by Brooks previously. Questions were in relation to rebel firing, how much work was done at night, and how much of the work was shovelling dirt. Suess also compared work done by soldiers during the siege to work done by citizens in civil life.
Transcription[Letter, continued] work done by one of our Soldiers during the Siege compare with a citizens in civil life? In answer to this I would say that I presume the question refers to work done under a moderate amount of fire. Supposing that a well paid civilian laborer were employed at shovelling during 6 hours (actual working hours, out of say 8 nominal workg [working] hours) He might be reasonably expected to remove about 25 or 30 Cub. ft. of earth, such as is found here, per hour. A fair average laborer out of a fatigue-party, when exposed to some firing, will generally not do more, during 6 actual working hours, than from 1/6 to 1/4 of that and I only recollect one instance when I partially found that a much nearer approach to a civilians amount of work was made by soldiers, but then I had a [picked?] party of infantry who from actual measurement removed from
