Dead chestnut trees Great Smoky Mountains National Park The chestnut blight killed chestnut trees. One CCC project was Fire Hazard reduction in which the dead chestnuts were removed to cut down the possibility of lightning striking them and starting forest fires. Collection of CCC negatives donated by John H.
