Tanning Great Smoky Mountains National Park The harness on the horse was made by Mr. Messer from leather which he tanned - the shoes which Mr. Messer is wearing the these pictures were also made by himself from leather the tanned. The bark mill Great Smoky Mountains National Park The bark mill...the horse pulling the sweep revolves an iron spindle in the center of the mill. This spindle, as well as the walls of the outside cylinder, are studded with iron spikes.
