In order that the millstone run true, it is necessary that the spindle be set normal to the face of the upper millstone. To do this, the wooden instrument shown in the picture and known as a tram, is used. The picture shows the upper millstone bottom-side up and the spindle in an inverted position, in order that i may be trued to the face of the stone.
