General view of sand trap. Mingus Creek Mill, Building No. 150, 1937 Great Smoky Mountains National Park General view of sand trap. The purpose of the sand trap is to catch silt and gravel which washes along the bottom of the forebay (flume), and keep it from getting into the turbine. Many of those rived boards are four feet long... In riving the boards (shakes) to cover the roof, the heart portions of the log cannot be used... these are often used to cell the chinks.
