Great Smoky Mountains National Park
These lick logs represent almost the last remaining evidence of the great herding activity which once flourished on the high meadows (or balds) of the Smokies. NOTE the split rails used to fill the chinks, the absence of mud sealing the chink, and the rived pine boards ceiling the chink. Many of those rived boards are four feet long... In riving the boards (shakes) to cover the roof, the heart portions of the log cannot be used... these are often used to cell the chinks. View of the race showing new spiling on both banks and one of several badly eroded spots. The water in the race washed away the toe of the upper bank, causing continuous erosion. Spiling was placed along the upper bank to prevent this.
