Everglades Report and associated files The original report titled "Report on Everglades Drainage Project in Lee and Dade Counties, Florida, January to May 1907 was produced by John T. Stewart, Drainage Engineer for the United States Department of Agriculture at the request of Florida Governor Broward. According to Everglades research scientist John C. Ogden, author of the letter of introduction accompanying the photocopy reproduction of this document, the Stewart report provides a "detailed description of the Everglades and adjacent country prior to the time of any significant drainage." Ogden writes, "Mr. Stewart reported on such a broad range of topics including vegetation, water depths and flow directions, soil types, agricultural practices, wildlife and topography, that his full 'diary' leaves one with as good a composite image of the old Everglades as will be found in a single primary document".
Everglades Ridge, Slough, and Tree Island Mosaics: Year 2 Annual Report The Florida Everglades is a large subtropical wetland with diverse hydrologic, edaphic, and vegetative characteristics. Historically, a significant portion of this system was a slow moving river originating from the Kissimmee River floodplain, flowing into the vast but shallow Lake Okeechobee, and draining south-southwest over extensive peatlands into Florida Bay (McVoy 2011). Human-induced alterations to the hydrologic regime, including reduction, stabilization, and impoundment of water flow through diversion and compartmentalization of water via canals and levees have degraded pre-drainage vegetation patterns and microtopographic structure (Davis and Ogden 1994, Ogden 2005, McVoy 2011).
