Wildlife. Close up of American Bittern. ANHINGA TRAIL - "Located in Royal Palm Hammock near the Homestead entrance, is one of the most popular wildlife shows in the park. From the paths and bridge-like boardwalks of the swampy trails, visitors are promised views of droves of alligators basking in the sun as well as the beautiful long-tailed anhinga, a skilled 'fisherman,' feasting on the profusion of freshwater fish that fill the watery sloughs of the Royal Palm area."

Close up of Anhinga swallowing a fish; "Anhinga-the habit of swimming around almost totally submerged with its snaky neck gliding above water like a white periscope has won the anhinga the nickname of snake bird. A skilled fisherman, this beautiful, large bird seeks its quarry by swimming underwater, speaking the fish with its beak, then tosses it into the air, catching it, and gulping it down in one fell swoop."
