Showing grading up to 4' solid bottom for a 4' trail. Hughes Ridge TrailGreat Smoky Mountains National ParkShowing grading up to 4' solid bottom for a 4' trail...Mattock handle 36 long. Result of this amount of grading on a gentle slide slope is a trail 7' wide unless the dirt is scattered over a wide area. All this is unnecessary work where the slide slope is as gentle as shown here. If any grading must be done, it should not be over 2' on solid, using the earth removed for fill to secure a 4' width. When the trail is close to the top of the ridge and the trail and side slope grade is low, there are no drainage problems.Hughes Ridge Trail, II-Th-5234, Physical Facilities - Trails - Horse Trails
Grading unnecessary for a 4' trail when the side slope is this steep. Chasteen Creek TrailGreat Smoky Mountains National ParkGrading unnecessary for a 4' trail when the side slope is this steep. Advantage should have been taken of the rock in the bank when placing the water bar. A small gully across the bar should have been placed here, with the end butted into the bank at the upper side of the rock, and the grade should have been flattened a little for a few feet above the bar. Always take advantage of rock or stumps when placing water bars, because they will be the starting place of a natural cross drainage.Chasteen Creek Trail, II-Th-5235, Physical Facilities - Trails - Horse Trails
