Oiling the hideGreat Smoky Mountains National ParkOiling the hide. When the hide is tanned and rubbed for the last time, it is given a coating of equal parts of tanner's oil and tallow. This mixture is applied hot before the hide dries...as the hide dries, the tanner's oil and tallow soak into the hide. The tanner's oil and tallow are applied to the pelt side of the hide only. The copper kettle under the eaves in which Mr. Messer heats the tanner's oil and tallow was used by his father when he tanned.
