Eye of Hurricane Betsy Everglades National Park; National Park Service Aerial view of hurricane; "Hurricane Betsy, the Atlantic storm that brought Gemini 5 Astronauts Conrad and Cooper home one orbit early, had her picture taken 90 miles north of Grand Turk island by a high-flying United States Air Force reconnaissance aircraft at 1:50 EDT September 2. Viewed from more than 11 miles above the earth, Betsy displayed the classic circular structure and central eye of the hurricane. Flying all USAF reconnaissance of Atlantic hurricanes, the Air Weather Service of the Military Transport Service has flown daily missions, penetrating the eye of Betsy. The USAF Hurricane Hunters will continue these flights until there is no longer a threat." Released by: Directorate of Information; Air Weather Service, Scott AFB, Illinois. Phone Belleville, Ill. Alpine 6-2042; Alpine 6-5149. Dated: 3 September 1965. Contains hand written note; "Neg. No. 175802 USAF".
