Mobile crane working on cut slopes, Gatlinburg Bypass, Tennessee, 1963 Great Smoky Mountains National Park An extreme example of the deterioration of the once stable material on the cut slopes. Fallen rocks and fine material have filled roadside gutters and partially blocked the roadway. Frequent removal of this debris, after each heavy rain, was necessary to keep open the drainage and not cause further saturation of the large fills.
