Letter to Brooks from Macaulay providing updates on the Companies, including their locations and activities. Macaulay also reports that the Iron Clads cannot do what was expected of them, and that they are a failure. Macaulay writes that they have seen in the papers some account of a fight between General Gillmore's command & a body of rebels, and that Macaulay hopes Brooks escaped safely.
Transcriptionclaims as an officer either in abilities or size or shape, are very small indeed it certainly is a shame to place him over men. We seen in the papers some account of a fight between Gen Gillmore's Command and a body of rebels. We have concluded you were in it and we hope you escaped safe. As we have not heard any news or seen any papers later than the 2nd just, we are anxiously waiting to hear what is going on in the other Army Corps. A good deal depends on them in this Spring campaign. I have very little more to add, in the event of any thing important transpiring you will hear of it. I am Captain; Your obd [obedient] ser't [servant]; [illegible] [Cray?] Macaulay; Serg't [Sergeant] Comp [Company] A; Capt. T. B. Brooks
