Letter to Brooks from Macaulay providing updates on the Companies, including their locations and activities. Macaulay also reports that the Iron Clads cannot do what was expected of them, and that they are a failure. Macaulay writes that they have seen in the papers some account of a fight between General Gillmore's command & a body of rebels, and that Macaulay hopes Brooks escaped safely.
Transcription[Letter, continued] delay and a change of [illegible] we again made Folly Island. Comp. [Company] "I" returned to Seabrook's Island we are now engaged in making a load. It would appear that the Generals did not know what to do I do not think they have any definite object in view. From near our present Camp can be seen very plain, the Tower batteries on James Island. They appear to have every portion of it well fortified. Their camp can be seen. They have made attempts to shell this portion of Folly Island. The shells fell short. The Company is well and in the best of spirits. We left Hilton Head with 68 men and as yet all have kept up. Serg't [Sergeant] Felter is with the Comp [Company] doing his duty. Duffy is still in York. We left as the [Head?] considered unfit to go through the fatigue Donohue, Eyles, McLean and Driggs (John) and O'Brien. Lieut [Lieutenant] McGuire is still in command. Hartmann is with Comp [Company] "B" but is not with the expedition last 2 [hrs?] returns were sent in by Lieut [Lieutenant] McGuire and made out from an Inventory taken at the time he took command. Their [There] is a discrepancy between it and the returns of Lieut. [Lieutenant] Hartmann he [Hartmann] informed me that he would make voucher accounting for the difference. Serg't [Sergeant] Anyan informs me that he wrote you, I think he is a little touched by the different promotions and Comp [Company] A being slighted. I suppose he considers it a personal matter certainly in point of ability he ought for some promoted are very much inferior in the qualifications necessary in an officer of this Corp.
