Letter to Brooks from Lt. Baldwin regarding the materials and labor required for the manufacture of sap rollers with iron gabions. Weights, dimensions, and cost are also provided.
TranscriptionIron Gabions; Baldwin Lieut. [Lieutenant]; Dec. [December] 9, 1863. [Letter] Morris Island SC [South Carolina] Dec. [December] 9-1863; Major; I have the honor to report as follows upon the manufacture of iron gabions and sap-rollers. For each iron gabion there are required. 30 iron rivets, flat-headed No. 7 wire guage, 18" in diameter; 44 Lbs of hoop iron .058" thick, No. 17 wire guage; 8.5' of 1" white pine boards; [5?] hours labor of our skilled men. This estimate of the amount of labor required [???] supposes its' [its] application in the most advantageous manner. The working party should consist of 10 men who should be disposed as follows. 4 men who should be carpenters to prepare the stakes; 2 smiths to cut and bend the iron, and rivet the hoops; 4 " " [smiths] to assemble the gabions.
