Letter to Brooks from Baldwin, stating that Baldwin's report on the exploded Parrott guns is enclosed. Baldwin writes that he has found a letter written by him before the war began that contains a plan for the production of heavy wrought-iron guns. Baldwin writes that he considers this plan superior to any method now in use, and says he will explain the method to Brooks at a future time.
TranscriptionMorris Isle SC. [South Carolina]; Sept [September] 24/63; Baldwin Lieut. [Lieutenant] J. S.; Encloses report on Failures of Parrott Guns with remarks. [Letter] Morris Island SC Sept 24-1863; Dear Brooks; I enclose my report upon the exploded Parrott Guns. You will observe, that it consists of facts alone; they will probably be more valuable to Mr. Parrott, than any deductions, or conclusions, which I might make, or arrive at. The subject of the construction of heavy ordnance, is [????] upon which I have bestowed considerable study and thought, and upon which I shall continue to do the same. I have just found a letter, written by me before the war began, which alludes to a plan for the production of heavy forgings, with the fibre of the iron running in any desired direction, totally free from flaws, and of any size. This plan I then considered, and now consider, superior to any method now in use, for the production of heavy wrought-iron guns.
