Letter to Gillmore from Brooks requesting that the Battery of 4-8" Mortars now in the right of the 3rd Parallel be moved forward to the 2nd Parallel. Brooks also recommends that field guns be placed in Battery in the 5th Parallel. A response from Gillmore, dated 1863-08-28, is included, stating that positions will be prepared for the 8" mortar & two field pieces in the 5th parallel, but they will not be placed there until further orders.
Transcription[Letter] Engineers Office-Morris Isle, S. C. [South Carolina]; Aug. [August] 28th 1863; Brig. [Brigadier] Gen. [General] Q. A. Gillmore; Cmdg. [Commanding] Dept. [Department] of South; General; I have the honor to recommend that the Battery of 4-8" Mortars now in the right of the 3rd Parellell [Parallel] be moved forward to the 2nd Parellell [Parallel] for the reasons that their fire from the present position endangers our own men in the 5th Parellell [Parallel] seriously; and that from the 2nd Parellell [Parallel] being within 200 yards of Ft. [Fort] Wagner could give the enemy very serious annoyance judging from his own Mortar fire at a greater distance. I also recommend that Field guns be placed in Battery in the 5th Parellell [Parallel] which will aide the mortars in [illegible] down the light gun fire of the Fort which has been very annoying the past two nights.
