[Answer]) Citizen laborers would have done the work in 1/10 of the time, but our soldiers worked under the constant annoyance of fire from sharpshooters compelling them to do 10 times the labour necessary to do the work without that annoyance. ([question?] [3rd?]) "How many tours of duty did I up to Sept [September] 7th" (Ans [Answer]) I did twelve. I am sorry [????] Major that I did not receive your note promptly-it was not my fault. I am Major; Very Respectfully; Your [Obedient] Servant; W. [Huber?] Pratt Capt [Captain] 55th M.V.I. [Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry?]
