Letter from Brooks to Mr. Arther Cheney? of the Spencer Repeating Rifle Co. requesting a change in the Spencer Army Rifle to enable the bayonet to be carried reversed on the Rifle for boat-service. A drawing is included. Brooks also requests any printed instructions concerning the use and care of their Spencer Rifles.
Transcription[Letter] [illegible] Oct. [October] [5?] 1863; [Mr. Arther Cheney?]; Spencer Repeating Rifle Co. [Company]; Boston Mass. [Massachusetts]; Sir; Yours of this [24th?] of Sept. [September] in reply to my inquiries [????] July. I regret that some simple arrangement cannot be effected in the Spencer Army Rifle which will enable the bayonet to be carried reversed on the Rifle for Boat-Service, in which service the Scabbard by the Soldiers side is greatly in the way of his rowing. If a simple rectangular cut large enough to admit the [????] be made in the jacket-opposite the neck their bayonet might be reversed and its point inserted in a short sheath [????] one end made first is this middle band in place of the
