Letter to Gillmore from Brooks in response to Gillmore's request that Brooks submit a list of maps necessary for a report on the military operations against the Defenses of Charleston Harbor. The list includes a general map of the whole field of operations, as well as siege operations and Batteries on several islands, with the desired scales. Brooks also recommends several men to assist in this work.
Transcription[Letter, continued] 3rd Maps of distinct periods or portions of the Siege operations-showing details to a scale of 50 feet to one inch. A. A map of Batteries on N. end of Folly Isle. with the [illegible] Rebel Batteries on Morris Isle [illegible]; B. A map of Batteries on Morris Isle, used against Ft. [Fort] Wagner on the 18th of July; C. Map of Batteries against Ft. [Fort] Sumter opened on the 17th of August; D. Map of approaches and Batteries against Ft. [Fort] Wagner which caused its evacuation on the 7th of Sept. [September]; E. A map showing the Swamp Battery against Charleston. 4th Such details of Construction shown by plans, [illegible] as each assistant Engineer may deem necessary to illustrate his work he made under his own direction. I respectfully recommend that Lieut. [Lieutenant] N. M. Edwards N. Y. [New York] Vol. [Volunteer] Engr. [Engineers] assisted by Artificer C. J. Lorrigan Vol. [Volunteer] Eng. [Engineers] with such additive assistants as Lieut. [Lieutenant] Edwards may [illegible] necessary be detailed in this work. I further recommend that suitable [illegible] not now when found in the Department be preserved for present and future use. [illegible].
