Transcription[Letter, continued] # See below. The average weight of iron gabions is 60 Lbs. The width of the hoop iron is immaterial, as, if it is of uniform thickness the quantity required will be the same in any case. The iron used in this siege (Ft. [Fort] Wagner) varied in width from 1" to 1.5". The cost of [one] iron gabions is approximately as follows. The [????] gabion, [????] per foot is $4. 44 Lbs of hoop iron at 8c per Lb-$3.52; 8.5 Feet of white pine 1" lumber, at 3.5c per foot-.30=3.82. When the comparative cost of the wood and iron are considered, together with the fact that the durability of the gabion depends, in a measure upon the excellence of its stakers, it will be found unadvisable to use any but the best material in the manufacture of the [?????]. # The dimensions of the [?????] are 3'X6.84. The stakes project from the gabion, 3', making its' total height 3'3", its diameter being 2'.
