Letter to Brooks from Lt. Baldwin regarding the materials and labor required for the manufacture of sap rollers with iron gabions. Weights, dimensions, and cost are also provided.
TranscriptionSap Rollers with Iron Gabions; Baldwin Lieut. [Lieutenant]; Dec. [December] 9th, 1863. [Letter, continued] For the manufacture of each lineal foot, of the exterior gabion, of a sap-roller 4' in diameter, are required; 14 Iron rivets, flat headed, No. 7 wire guage, 18" in diameter; 5.25 Feet of pine, 1.5" stuff; 31 Lbs of hoop-iron, No 17 wire guage; 2.5 Hours labor of one man. The working party should consist of not less than 4 men, and the above statement contemplates a proper division of labor. At least half of the men employed should be able to use a rip-saw. The weight of 1' of yellow pine is 4.06 Lbs. The average weight of fasteners (9" in diameter by 18 feet long) is 165.66 Lbs. The weight of a lineal foot of the same is 9.2 Lbs. The gabion contains 14 stakes, rectangular in sections 3"X1.5". The weight of the stakes required for one lineal foot of the exterior gabion is 22 Lbs, if they are of yellow-pine. No correct estimate of the weight of a sap- [sap-roller]
