Transcription[Letter] Copy; Head Quarters Volunteer Engineers; Hilton Head S.C. Feb [February] 8th 1862; Captain; I have the honor to enclose a note from Maj. [Major] Paulding Chf. [Chief] Paymaster dated today and respectfully to request that such orders may be given that the intention of the President, the Hon. [Honorable] Sec. [Secretary] of War and the orders of the Comdg [Commanding] General may be carried into effect, and the officers and men of this command paid as heretofore. Very Respectfully; Your obt. [obedient] Servant; (Signed) Edward W. Serrell; Col. [Colonel] Vol. [Volunteer] Engineers; To Capt. [Captain] L.H. Pelouze U.S.A.; A.A.A. Gen [General] [E.C.?]; The Copy of Maj. [Major] Paulding's Note to Col. [Colonel] Serrell was endorsed as follows by Gen [General] Sherman.  "Anticipating a misunderstanding of this sort, when in Washington I took the pains to ascertain from the War Dept. [Department] what claims this Reg't [Regiment] had to the position and pay of Engineers, and I was officially but verbally informed that they had been mustered as Engineers by order of the President of the United States and were to be paid as such.  To reverse this decision at this late day would produce consequences highly injurious to the activity, efficiency and contentment of this most indispensible branch of this command.  I must therefore direct, until otherwise ordered by higher authority, that this Regiment receive the pay and emoluments of Engineers.  (Signed) T.W.
