Letter to Brooks from Suess in response to eleven questions sent to Suess by Brooks previously. Questions were in relation to rebel firing, how much work was done at night, and how much of the work was shovelling dirt. Suess also compared work done by soldiers during the siege to work done by citizens in civil life.
Transcription[Letter, continued] that the embrasures of batteries in the 2d [second] parallel were built during nighttime, as well as the covering of magazines and splinter-proofs then loaded. Also the Beach-barricade on the right of the 2d [second] parallel with its defensive [illegible] for Requa-batt [Battery] [illegible]. Also by far the longer part of all the approaches and parallels beyond the 2d [second] parallel, and invariably so whenever the flying sap was employed with or without gabions (although in the [butter?] case it would not deserve the name). There was further all the hauling of material done required for reveting and building parapets, magazine and splinter-proofs, laying of plat-forms, etc. such as sand-bags, gabions, timber, platform-stuff etc. Several lines of fraises and wire-entanglement were likewise made solely during night-time.
