Also contains tables of data showing how much dirt can be dug by men in a period of time.
TranscriptionNote No. 15.; Penetration of rifled musket balls into various kinds of siege material ascertained by practice on Morris Island. The Sharp, Enfield and Spencer Rifles were used at distances of from 10 to 15 yards. In dry yellow pine, penetration from 2 3/4 to 3 1/4 in. In green palmetto, penetration from 7 1/2 to 8 1/2 in. In a dry fascine, penetration from 8 1/2 to 9 1/2 in. In dry sand contained in bags, penetration from 6 to 7 in. In wet sand contained in bags, penetration from 7 1/2 to 8 1/2 in. In loose damp sand, penetration from 8 to 14 in. In cotton packed in Sand-bags by hand, penetration to 22 in. One cubic foot of the dry fine light colored quartz sand above reffered to and chiefly used in the construction of the Siege works on Morris Island weighs 86 pounds. It will when dry absorb about 3 gallons of water per cubic foot will then weight 1111 pounds and will have diminished in bulk about one twentieth.
