TranscriptionSiege of Charleston; Engineers Office Morris Island; Aug [August] 20th 1863; Instructions for Engineer Officers employed on the Right, and in advance of the 1st Parallel; I. The Sap work, which is in progress toward Fort Wagner, is in charge of Capt. [Captain] Walker assisted by Lieut [Lieutenant] Parsons. And Capt. [Captain] Suess assisted by Lieut. [Lieutenant] Wilcken; 1st. Rgt. [Regiment] N.Y. [New York] Vol [Volunteer] Engineers; 25 men from Co. [Company] "[J?]"; 12 " " " [men from Company] "B"; 12 " " " [men from Company] "D": N.Y. [New York] Vol. [Volunteer] Engrs. [Engineers]; Will be formed into four sapping brigades. The above named officers will arrange their brigades, times of relief andc [etc.] as they may see fit. One third the length of the sap must be fitted for infantry defense. The advanced Guard of the Trenches will furnish a constant detail of 20 Infantry for duty in the sap. (See enclosed instructions to the Guard)
