Letter to Brooks from Smith stating that Smith and Mr. Bradley own the Patent from Billinghurst & Requa, and that a printed pamphlet of reprints is enclosed where Brooks will find all of his inquiries regarding the guns answered, except as to operations in the field. Smith writes that he has a great personal feeling in seeing the Batteries tested.
Transcription[Letter, continued] business, in his then proposed visit to [????], to urge upon the Department, the furnishing of every Boat that navigated the Mississippi River, with two Batteries each-He had previously written us a [????] reprint upon the Battery, and will understand its use. Outside of my pecuniary interest in this Battery, which is a large one, I have a great personal feeling in seeing it tested- I know it has great capacity, and I want to know whether soldiers in battle can bring them out. If consistent with your professional duties I should feel extremely obliged, if you would send me a copy of your reprint-It will have great public importance. In this connection you can command my services at any time. Very truly; Your Obt [Obedient] Servt [Servant]; David Smith; P. S. The invention dates from the Spring of 1862; Patented Sept. [September] of last year; DS.
