Letter to Brooks from Smith stating that Smith and Mr. Bradley own the Patent from Billinghurst & Requa, and that a printed pamphlet of reprints is enclosed where Brooks will find all of his inquiries regarding the guns answered, except as to operations in the field. Smith writes that he has a great personal feeling in seeing the Batteries tested.
Transcription[Letter] 36 Liberty St. [Street]; New York October 30th; 1863; Major T. B. Brooks; Sir; I have your form of the 26th [????] to Smith and Bradley-Mr. Bradley and myself own the Patent from Billinghurst and Requa. Mr. B. attending to the mechanical part, and the [????] the part of the connection. They to [enclose?] you a printed pamphlet of Reprints wherein you will find all your enquiries answered, except as to operations in the field- Gen'l Banks took out with him [six?] of these Batteries, but the ammunition was supplied by the [parties?], and was found at New Orleans to be made with Balls too large for the Calibre of the Battery, and suitable ammunitin was not furnished until the part [splinter?]; I am inclined that the Batteries at New Orleans are ready for any service upon which they may be ordered, but do not know that they [will?] ever in actual conflict. Two Batteries were sent out April to [????] on the Mississippi, tried, [????] him within the past month [McCleod Murphy?] from the [Northern?] Flotilla was here, and stated to me verbally, that the Batteries had done all that could be expected of them, and that he would make it part of his
