Letter to Brooks from Crane responding to Major Brooks' request to know the number of torpedoes found in front of Fort Wagner. Crane reports a total of 44, which were all of the plunger kind. Crane also reports seeing 5 of the patent torpedoes.
Transcription[Letter] Folly Island Dec. [December] 17th-1863; Maj [Major] T. B. Brooks; Sir; In accordance with your instructions rec'd [received] by note of the 14th to report to you as to the number of torpedoes found in front of Ft. Wagner I humbly submit the following number. At the telegraph office 2. In front of entanglement 1. At the Keep 1. In the rear of fourth parelel [parallel] 7. Fifth parelel [parallel] 25. Severel in sight but not dug out 8. [Total] 44. All of this was of the plunger kind. In the foot of the ditch I have seen severel [several] patent torpedoes, these patent are made out 1/2 inch iron and flat on the tops. of this number I remember 5 which is all I can say I have seen. The above is as near the facts of the case as I can arrive at and I respectfully submit for your consideration. Your Humbly; Corpl [????] L Crane
