Transcription[Paper damaged and ???? along left side] General; I have the honor to respectfully ask the [????] priviledge to devote my [leisure?] [????] and arranging under your [????] for the Instruction [????] soldier; thus attempting to [????] Engr [Engineer] Troops such information [????] instruction concerning their [????] as Patten and others have so effectually accomplished for the Artillery, Cavalry and Infantry arms of the service in their [????] publications. [????] want for such a book exists will I [????] by every intelligent member of the [????] Engineer Organizations now in [????]. [????] want felt by Vol. [Volunteer] Engr. [Engineer] Officers [????] supplied by the works of Prof. [Professor] Mahau [????] [Duane?]. But both these works [????] extensive and too expensive for the [????] Mahaus work has not detail enough [????] Duanes too many. Much valuable [information?] gained by the experience of [????] the present war is [????]. Neither work has a [????], which is [needing?] [????] [understanding?] of the text by our [????] men. The important subject of [????] orders is not treated by Duane and only partially by Mahau. [????] instruction, given in either concerning the [????] heavy ordnance.
