Transcription[Letter] Naval Battery Camp; Morris Island SC [South Carolina]; Sept. [September] 18th 1863; Major Brooks; Sir; I am most happy to give you all the information in my power in regard to the serving of the guns in the Naval Battery. 1. 668 rounds were fired from one gun; 661 """" [rounds were fired from] the other; 2. The guns were new, never having been fired in service before; 3. The average recoil was about six feet, the compressors being lightly screwed down so as check the recoil very slightly; 4. The projectiles were all well greased with Tallow; 5. We fired ten rounds from one gun at intervals of about 7 1/2 minutes and then allowed that gun to cool while we fired ten rounds from the other; I think that the Navy Gun carriages are superior to the iron army carriages as the Navy carriages
