Letter to Brooks from Hanford enclosing the Signals and Sentences for Steamers, and advising Brooks to have Gillmore make application for procuring a boat.
Transcription[Letter, continued] the war on the Mississippi river and engaged altogether in river warfare I consider myself pretty well posted. I would refer the Genl [General] if anything of that kind is necessary as to my capabilities to do the work, that I know will be required of me, to Rear Admiral David D. Porter Comdg [Commanding] Miss [Mississippi] Squadron and to the Official Report of the Sec. [Secretary] of the Navy for 1863. And Major if you would be kind enough to speak to the Genl [General] in regard to the matter, and let me know by return mail I would be a thousand times obliged to you and under many obligations and you may rest assured that there would be no shirking work with and no matter what would be required of me to do I would cheerfully do it. As to the nature of the boat I would think the Alice Price would be just the thing. I should think the best way would be for the Genl [General] to have
