Transcription[Letter] U. S. Brig "Perry"; Fernandina; March 17th 1864; Dear Sir; Enclosed I send you the Signals and Sentences for Steamers as used by us on the Mississippi River. In regard to my procuring a boat for the express purpose of cooperating with the Land Forces I would deem it more advisable to have Genl [General] Gillmore make application first himself for such a purpose. I have pondered ever the matter well and if the Genl [General] would take the matter in hand I know he would accomplish it. For my part I would like to have the Boat and myself placed under the Genls [General's] orders independent entirely, as far as action is concerned, of the Navy.
