Transcription[Letter] Copy; Head Quarters Volunteer Engineers; Hilton Head S.C. Feb. [February] 7th [1862?]; Captain; I have the honor to inform you that a question is again raised by the Paymasters concerning the pay of the officers and men of this command, notwithstanding the orders that the Comdg [Commanding] General issued to employ and pay them as Engineer troops. I have therefore most respectfully to request that the necessary orders may again be issued to pay them as they were mustered by order of the President. Very Respectfully; Your obt. [obedient] servt [servant]; Edward W. Serrell; Col. [Colonel] Vol. [Volunteer] Engineers; To Capt. [Captain] L.H. Pelouze U.S.A.; A.A.A. Gen. [General?] [E.C.?]; this letter was endorsed as follows by Gen. [General] Sherman; "Serrells Regiment was mustered into service as Engineers, and are doing duty as such. I was informed by the Sec. [Secretary] of War in a conversation on the subject, that they were so ordered by the President and were entitled to pay as Engineers. This thing was so settled before I left Washington" signed T.W. Sherman; Brig. [Brigadier] Gen. [General] Comdg [Commanding]; Feb [February] 7/[62?]; Copies of the above articles with the following note from Col. [Colonel] E.W. Serrell were sent to Major [Paulding?] [????] Paymaster of Shermans Division.
