TranscriptionSeeing the Genl [General] immediately afterwards I took occasion to say to him that Maj [Major] Erritt now had money and was gone to St. Helena but that on leaving he said to Lt [Lieutenant] Col. [Colonel] Hall he would only pay as Infantry, deducting the $4.00 already said to be overpaid. The Genl [General] replied I need give myself no uneasiness if the money was to be had the men should be paid as ordered, it was all right if the money was here andc [etc.] to same effect. On Maj [Major] [????] return if the money is here I shall bring this thing to an [????]-either we must be paid or disbanded. If we are falsely mustered and cannot be paid, then we are private citizens at our own will-but this view of the case cannot be taken with the Genls [General's] order it is only for him to have it enforced. The Pier is nearly done and the Stockade on the right is finished, between the Block house and the right of the Earthwork about one third of the Stockade is up. The Blockhouse is finished. About two or three tides will finish the flood gate. The stockading at Fort Wells is all done and I am now reveting with poles and brush [(Counterscoop?)]. The Major is finished all but the Manure. I have ten carts drawing manure to the works all the time. I have made a survey of the entire ground from the [????] to the road at Draytons including everything. Several large ships and steamers have been alongside the Pier. Very Respy [Respectfully] Your obt [obedient] svt [servant]; Edward W. Serrell; Col. [Colonel] Vol. [Voluntary] Engineers; Brig [Brigadier] Genl [General] Gillmore; Chief Engineer
