Descriptive InformationWilburn's Historical Paper No. IV, Plate I. This view if looking south, showing a section of the Little Tennessee River where Abrams Creek joins it. The concrete bridge in the foreground, under which the creek flows, is a viaduct of Federal Highway 129, which highway runs along north, or right bank of the river for a good many miles through this area, and also skirts the southeast border to the Park something 10 miles. The flat bottom land across the river in the background in the vicinity of the buildings and the team plowing is the area that was occupied by the Cherokee town, Chilhowee, as represented by the Timberlake map, illustrative Plate III in this paper. (Photo No. IV-M-405) For placement relative to the Park, refer to the WEST half of the topographic map of the Park published by the USGS in 1934. It was originally planned to take all of the Abrams Creek area into the Park. But it is generally understood that the Aluminum Company of America has a proposed hydro-electric development that will flood this area.
